Stourport-on-Severn (Archive Photographs: Images of England)

This fascinating collection of over 200 old

photographs portrays Stourpornon'Severn, -òthe canal town par excellence.-ô The collection records the basins and river of this Georgian town in Worcestershire and includes scenes dating well back into the nineteenth century, illustrating Stourport-ôs maritime history as an inland port.

The important role that the Staffordshire & Worcestershire canal and the river have played in the development of Stourport is clearly shown, in terms of both employment and leisure. Various aspects of everyday life are illustrated; the town enjoyed a lively social and cultural life with a large variety of organizations and festivities. Important industries of the town are shown, such as the two hundred yean old vinegar brewery, now sadly closed. Also we see the main streets and family shops, where some names still survive today.

The images in this book were collected for the Stourport Civic Society by Anna Carter, who drew on numerous sources and generous local help to put together this valuable collection. Through the medium of these old photographs, Stourport-ôs past is brought to life and the reader is given a wonderful glimpse into days gone by.
