We follow the changing society, religion and politics of Scotland across the centuries: the tragedies, the triumphs, the victorious battles and the unholy massacres, the 'auld enemy' and the 'auld alliance'. In addition there is a chapter given to the activities of the group known as the Jacobites who disputed the Hanoverian succession and sought to return a Stewart to the throne long after the 1707 union.
