Books 'preface' reads: The nineteenth century was a time of great achievement in music, literature and the fine arts. There was one period in that age, however, which must be regarded as a culmination and at the same time as the beginning of a new tendency in art. Vienna was one of the European centres of this artistic activity. Composers congregated in Vienna, and it was from Vienna that many a talented man started out on the climb to the pinnacle of significant achievement. The Creditanstalt-Bankverein has sponsored the publications by Kunstverlag Wolfrum of a comprehensive volume, The "Old Vienna" School of Painting, by Professor Bruno Grimschitz, in order to provide its own friends and other lovers of art with a full description of the painting of this period in the nineteenth century.
