Cutting into the wild, sparsely inhabited moorland of the North Pennines is a surprisingly well-populated and beautiful dale - Weardale. Up-river from Wolsingham lies a string of villages of varying size with never more than about 3 miles between them. This collection of old photographs depicts some of the industrial history of the villages and surrounding area, which was based on quarrying (now much decrease) and lead mining (no longer in existence), as well as scenes of everyday life in the district of years gone by. The wealth of vernacular architecture is not neglected, where some of the buildings associated with quarrying and lead mining now lie derelict. The fact that many families are long-established means that there are many people with memories of the dale. This has proved invaluable in the search for photographs and in obtaining information about the history of the dale, its people and buildings. All in all this volume provides the reader with an absorbing and informative glimpse into the past of this scenic district.
