The Field Archaeology of the Salisbury Plain Training Area

Charts the remarkable survival of neolithic and later sites on the training area, which were so common elsewhere on the Wiltshire Downs, but have now disappeared. This survey elaborates the earlier records by Colt Hoare and Cunnington with the survival of barrows, hillforts and the vast areas of 'Celtic' as well as the recognition of extensive linear ditch systems. Most impressive has been the discovery of 11 Romano-British settlement, and the later evidence of gun emplacements and slit trenches. Curiously, but perhaps not surprisingly, the present state of Imber village is neglected, with the exception of a vertical air photograph which shows very little.
