The photographs in this delightful selection recall life in the area between 80 and 100 years ago and are a vivid record of a time before the use of electricity became widespread, when water was still drawn from the well and transport was horse-drawn. The pictures are, in the main, the work of local professionals, for whom the popularity of the postcard view provided a livelihood, but a number of family snapshots offer a more candid glimpse of life among the labouring and landed classes at the turn of the 19th/20th century. The area covered is that part of modern Cumbria between the Lune and Winster rivers which lies to the south and east of Kendal, including Burton-in-Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Milnthorpe, Arnside and the region's many smaller settlements. John Marsh's selection, illuminated by his informative commentary, will appeal to all who know this beautiful part of South Lakeland.
