Creating Australia, 200 years of art 1788-1988

This is a book based on an exhibition of Australian art, an exhibition which was produced to tour all six Australian States as part of the Australian Bicentennial Authority's arts program for 1988-89. It differs from most previous accounts of Australian art. First, there is the embrace of many visual-arts media: not only paintings and sculptures but also prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics, silver and furniture. However, the book is not an exact reflection of the exhibition; it includes illustrations of furniture and of some large sculptures which eventually, for reasons of transport costs, could not travel, and it illustrates some paintings and watercolours which, for reasons of fragility, must travel to fewer than all the six capital cities.
