This Won't Kill You

The three stories in this volume were originally published in 'American Magazine'. 'This Won't Kill You' retains the same title, but the magazine title for 'Zero Clue' was 'Scared to Death', whilst that of 'Invitation to Murder' was 'Will to Murder'. The Viking Edition was published in March 1954 and the Dollar Mystery Guild Edition June 1954. This Bantam Edition was first published in November 1955, with this (the 7th print run), coming out in August 1980, ISBN 0-553-13666-6. STORYLINES: Invitation to Murder: Estranged from his father, Mr. Herman Lewent's inheritance and monthly income lies with Theodore Huck, his late sister's husband. Trouble is it looks like Huck has got involved with one of his live-in helpers: Miss Dorothy Riff, Mrs Cassie O' Shea, or Miss Sylvia Marcy. He believes that once Huck and the girl have got together, they'll start thinking of ways to stop paying him any inheritance whatsoever. He needs Nero and Archie to find out which one it is so he can try and win her sympathy to avert such a personal catastrophe. Archie takes on the job and then a corpse (or two) get in the way... In 'The Zero Clue', a famous mathematician Leo Heller, with a reputation for solving some pretty obscure problems with mathematical formulae believes one of his clients has committed a crime and needs them to investigate. Leo gets topped by said client, but not before leaving a cryptic clue for the cops: "N. W." Has Wolfe murdered his client? Or is there another explanation? This Won't Kill You sees Nero and Archie at a baseball game, where the Giants are playing the 7th and deciding game against the Red Sox. Archie loves the Giants, but things are going badly for them...and even worse for one of their players - Nick Ferrone. Owner of the Giants, Emil Chisholm sends for Nero to investigate the drugging of his players' Beebright drinks with Sodium Phenobarbital, but the cops enter the fray when a body is found. So begins the race to earn the fee...
