The Great Cities: Sydney

Sydney is one of the world's most thriving and self-reliant cities. Two of its landmarks - the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House - are universally familiar. The beaches that spread their golden paradise of sun and sand to north and south of the harbour headlands are close enough to the city centre for Sydneysiders to go surfing before work in the morning. In his thoughtful text, author Peter Porter throws many lights on the people of this vigorous and confident city, which combines the puritan work ethic of its northern heritage with the hedonism of its sun-soaked position in the Southern Hemisphere. Brian Brake's photographs vividly impart the feeling of the place, from the glamour of the beaches to the charming traces of the 19-th Century town.
