Bermuda's sailors of fortune

Bermuda's richest privateering era coincided with the French Revolutionary revolt in Haiti between 1793-1800. Rich French planters fleeing the flaming sugar island crowded onto the merchantmen of all nations leaving the ports of Haiti and were duly intercepted by privateers on the wide ocean reaches and brought into Bermuda with the little they had salvaged. Deeds of violence and valour abroad alternate with accounts of political chicanery and mutiny in the garrison at home in these pages from Bermuda's past.
