Zeno served with the British 1st Airborne Division in Africa, the Central Mediterranean and Arnhem. He was commissioned in the field. In more recent years Zeno twice won the Arthur Koestler Award while serving a term of imprisonment, once in 1963 for a collection of short stories and in 1965 for this grippingly realistic novel.
