This story is set in Medieval Japan, and narrated by Isaku, a boy living in a remote fishing village. The villagers don't catch enough fish, so distill fresh water from sea water to sell. More sinisterly the salt fires are used to lure ships aground, but then one sinks with a deadly cargo.
